Tuesday's Fieldtrip

In an attempt to enjoy the last week of summer as much as possible, we are trying to do at least one fun activity everyday.  So, today, we went to see the movie "Up" in 3-D.  The photo is from my phone, so it isn't great, but still documents the event. Here's the gang in their 3-D glasses. After the movie, my kids were starving and since there is no food at home, we also stopped for bagels.  When the kids were telling Shawn about going to the movie, Amelia declared, "Yeah, but I really wanted to see "Down".  Maybe one day, that movie will be made, too.  So far, we have finished up both days with at least some of us going swimming.  Hopefully, we can find enough things to keep us busy for the rest of the week.  I think tomorrow it may be slurpees and the park.  Anyone is welcome to join us!

Sweet's Candy Factory

In what has become an almost yearly summer tradition, we took a little field trip to the Sweet Candy Factory with Michelle and her kids. Everyone is always so excited to go (for the free samples I'm sure).  We had to reschedule a couple of times this summer but we finally made it.Here's the whole gang in front of the store.  Of course, everyone loves that we have to wear the fancy "candy maker hats"  and all of the kids especially got a kick out of Peter wearing one too.  He actually had to wear a beard cover so it wouldn't be too big.
I was amazed that he did such a good job of leaving it alone and it stayed on until the end of the tour.  Just to see how much has changed, I found a picture of our first visit in 2005.  There were definitely fewer children and the ones that were there were a lot smaller.

Leaving On a Jet Plane

I put my baby on a plane by himself today. (Not my baby baby - but my first born baby.)  A hard thing to do as a mother.  Shawn said he was cool and confident.  I hope he has a great time.
He is on his way to visit his Grandpa Quincy and Fran in Chicago.  There should be enough cool museums and things to keep him happy all week.  I just hope he'll remember to brush his teeth.

As far as I'm concerned, Jonas has had a great 10 year old summer.  He's been to Bear Lake 3 times.  Took tennis lessons - which he loved.  Swim team every day  - which he didn't love so much.  A trip to Yellowstone with his Grandma Cathy and Doug which he thought was so cool.  A trip to Mill Hollow with friends from school and now this trip to Chicago.  (That's 3 trips without his sisters around to annoy him - I think he misses Peter when he's gone, though.)  It's no wonder that he is so upset about school starting.  I wouldn't want all that fun to end either.

Samantha's Masterpiece

Samantha asked me to get the camera and take a picture of her "masterpiece".  This is what I found.  Poor Peter.  I'm sure this is only the beginning of the things he will suffer at the hands of his 3 older sisters.  I don't know where Jonas was - certainly not protecting his brother.
On a more positive note, though, Peter willingly takes a bottle and can even hold it himself.  Hallelujah!

Fun things to get us out of the house...

First, to celebrate Rob's birthday, we took a picnic and hiked to Cecret Lake at Alta.  Shawn carried Duffy on his back and Peter on his front, and everyone else was on their own.  (I wasn't a total slacker - I carried the food on my back.)  Due to an unfortunate accident with our camera I don't have pictures of this event but Michelle took some good photos and posted them on her blog.  We had a lot of fun and decided (again) that we need to do more hiking.  Then for Robbie's birthday, we had dinner at Paradise Bakery with the Marshes and our friends the Dunfords and then we went to the Peter Breinholt concert at the Sandy amphitheater.  It was a late night but I think the kids really enjoyed it.  Jonas is not too particular about how his hair looks as demonstrated here.
There was a lot of dancing.  It was probably a bit much for the people sitting around us, but what could we do?And one day last week we met some friends at the Tracy Aviary. Jonas has been begging to go ever since he went with his school class earlier this year.  It was extremely hot and before long we were all dying for water.  Still some cool birds to look at. And we enjoyed the bird show.
Seeing how everyone measures up.

Four Months Old

It is hard to believe that 4 months have already gone by, and yet it seems like Peter has always been here.  As hard as it is, I just love having a little baby in the house.  I love how his face lights up and he breaks into a huge grin when I come in to get him in the morning, and he arches his little back letting me know he wants to be picked up. He is a pretty happy and calm baby.  Unfortunately, he still sucks his thumb - either hand will do - whichever is more convenient.  A lot of the time he has both thumbs in the "thumbs up" position - ready to pop into his mouth.
I have to wonder just how recessive those blue-eyed genes are since he is clearly keeping his blue eyes.  He is extremely alert and social.  He smiles at anyone who acknowledges him and will start cooing if they maintain eye contact.
Do I wish I were more in control of my life and my time? Do I wish I could keep my house picked up?  Do I wish I had my pre-baby body back?  Sure, but I can let some of those wishes go (at least temporarily), when I see this little face smiling up at me.

height: 25.5 inches (75%)

More Boating Fun

We have been trying to go boating at least once a week and finally some of the kids are adding to their repertoires and moving beyond just riding in the tubes and on the hotdog.
We managed to convince Jonas to try skiing again, and as you can see, he was very happy with himself.
Shawn has always had many skills, but I was particularly impressed when he was able to get up on the surfboard with Amelia and Samantha (separately).  Yes, Amelia is wearing goggles.  Last week when she fell in she decided she got too much water up her nose so she wore goggles and was all ready to plug her nose this time, but she didn't even get the top of her head wet.
A rare, collective moment of happiness and harmony.  (One of the reasons we like the boat.)
Samantha on flag duty.  (According to the law, the flag holder must be at least 8 years old - she reminds us of this anytime we let one of the little girls hold it.)
Peter enjoying the ride.
Duffy "pretending to be the Mom".  She's been paying attention because she knew about moving the throttle and made sure everyone was in their lifejackets.
Everyone seems to enjoy just hanging out on the boat and relaxing in the sunshine.  (Eating good food helps, too.)
